Dry Dog Food Or Canned Dog Food

Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul Dry Dog Food for Adult Dog, 35 Pound BagA question that I get asked a lot is “what’s better? Dry dog food or canned dog food?” And the answer is: “well, it depends”.

First and foremost, it depends on your dog. Like us, some of us like a particular type of food, and some of us don’t. I myself can’t stand potatoes! But, I bet 99% of the people reading this blog right now disagree with me and think potatoes are the “cats meow!” (hey, this is a dog site! No cat jokes). The point is, it depends on your pet and his or her preferences. Dry dog food will cost less on a per serving basis than canned dog food (just look at this canned chicken soup!). However, because the nutrients tend to be much more concentrated, you definitely won’t need to feed nearly as much.

Thus far, dry dog food or canned dog food can be tricky. Dry dog food does not contain as much moisture. On average, moisture content of a dogs food is only five to nine percent for dry dog food, and an astounding eighty percent for canned dog food.

On a more perosnal note comparing dry dog food or canned dog food is canned dog food can perhaps be better for dogs that have problems going number one due to its higher moisture concentration. Canned dog food also provides a greater volume of food, while providing the adequate calories. Thus, should your dog be overweight, this may provide some assistance in his or hers diet. Something else to think about while you are contemplating dry dog food or canned dog food:  dry dog foods can be made to help clean their teeth while chewing. Albeit, dogs with severe dental problems may in fact fair better eating moist canned dog food.

A few other worthy notes to keep in mind before making your final decision:

Depending on your dog’s health condition,  canned dog food tends to contain a  higher fat and protein diet to them with fewer carbohydrates, whereas dry dog foods tend to contain an excess of starch (which isn’t overly alarming in most cases).
